Apples: Santa fe happenings Vermont and other New England states may have the reputation for attracting the most “leaf peepers” (tourists who flock to an area mainly to appreciate the fall foliage), but the mountains around Santa Fe also put on a fine show. For a sampling, take Artist Road north from town toward the Santa Fe Ski Basin and prepare for the golden glow of the aspens to take your breath away. Go one better and stop at one of the many trailheads along the way—Aspen Vista is popular, but there are plenty of other trails in the area that are less crowded. Get out of the car and immerse yourself in Santa Fe’s autumnal alpine splendor.

If fall leaves you longing for the crisp snap of an apple from the fall’s first harvest, hit the road. Southwest of Santa Fe in Peña Blanca is Dixon’s Apple Orchard, which harvests their fruit from the middle of September into October (simply put, they stop selling when they run out of fruit). Dixon’s grows four types of apples—Champagne, Red Delicious, Red Rome, and Sparkling Burgundy—which come in at different times during the season. You can buy them prepicked (in whole and half bushels) or wander the lanes of the orchard and pick your own. They also sell gallon jugs of fresh apple cider as well as wheelbarrows of apple wood, an aromatic wood perfect for use in your home smoker. While you’re there, you can also enjoy a picnic on the grounds. To get to the orchard from Santa Fe, take Interstate 25 south to the Cochiti exit (264). At Highway 22, turn right toward Cochiti Lake, drive about 6 miles past the lake, and follow the signs. The farm is at the end of the road. Come prepared: Dixon’s only accepts cash.
